About Smooth Purse

Born from personal experience, built to help others

Our Story

Smooth Purse started in 2021 when three friends, all recent arrivals to the UK, found themselves sharing frustrations over coffee in a Manchester café. Each of us had struggled with different aspects of settling in, but the theme was consistent: simple tasks felt unnecessarily complicated.

Sarah had spent two months trying to open a bank account, constantly being told she needed documents she didn't have. James had unknowingly overpaid council tax for six months because he didn't understand the system. Ana had signed a tenancy agreement with unfair terms because she didn't know what to look out for.

We realised that the information existed somewhere online, buried in forums and scattered across government websites. But finding it, understanding it, and applying it to your specific situation was another matter entirely. We started helping each other, then helping friends of friends, and eventually decided this needed to become something more formal.

What began as informal advice sessions in that café has grown into a dedicated service. We've now helped over eight hundred people navigate their first year in the UK, and each person we work with teaches us something new about the challenges newcomers face.

What We Stand For

Practical Over Perfect

We're not here to give you the theoretically optimal answer. We're here to help you get things done with the time and resources you actually have. Sometimes the best solution is the one that works right now, even if it's not perfect.

Honesty About Challenges

We don't pretend moving to a new country is easy. Some processes are genuinely frustrating. Some systems don't make sense. We'll tell you which battles are worth fighting and which ones you just need to get through.

Respect for Your Background

The UK way isn't the only way or necessarily the best way. We help you understand how things work here without dismissing how things worked where you came from. Cultural adaptation is a two-way street.

Independence as the Goal

Our success is measured by how quickly you stop needing us. We want to teach you how to navigate UK systems yourself, not create dependency. The goal is always to make you self-sufficient.

The People Behind Smooth Purse

We're a small team united by the experience of building new lives in the UK. Each of us brings different perspectives, professional backgrounds, and settling-in stories.

Sarah Mitchell

Co-Founder & Housing Specialist

Originally from Australia, Sarah moved to the UK in 2019. After working in property management for three years, she knows the rental market inside out. She specialises in helping people understand tenancy rights and avoid common housing pitfalls.

James Kowalski

Co-Founder & Finance Guide

James arrived from Poland in 2018 and spent his first year navigating the complexities of UK banking, taxation, and financial systems. He now helps others set up their finances correctly from day one, saving them the costly mistakes he made.

Ana Rodriguez

Co-Founder & Integration Advisor

Moving from Spain in 2020, Ana experienced both the professional and personal sides of cultural adjustment. She focuses on workplace integration, social connections, and the less tangible aspects of feeling at home in a new country.

Yuki Tanaka

Healthcare & Legal Navigator

Yuki joined the team in 2022 after her own experience with the NHS and UK healthcare system. She helps people understand how to access medical services, register with GPs, and navigate healthcare as newcomers.

How We Work

We Listen First

Every person's situation is different. Before we offer any advice, we want to understand your specific circumstances, concerns, and priorities. A recent graduate has different needs than a family relocating for work.

We Provide Context

It's not enough to tell you what to do. We explain why things work the way they do in the UK, what the historical or cultural reasons are, and how to think about similar situations in the future. This builds your confidence to handle new challenges independently.

We Stay Current

UK regulations, especially around immigration and housing, change regularly. We keep track of updates, follow policy changes, and adjust our guidance accordingly. What worked six months ago might not work today.

We Admit What We Don't Know

We're not immigration lawyers, tax accountants, or legal advisors. When a question falls outside our expertise, we'll tell you honestly and point you toward appropriate professional help. We know our limits.

What We've Accomplished

800+ People Helped

From students to professionals, families to solo travellers, we've supported people from over forty countries in settling into UK life.

95% Satisfaction Rate

Based on feedback surveys, the vast majority of people we work with would recommend us to others in similar situations.

Average £800 Saved

By helping people avoid common mistakes and find better deals on essentials, our clients typically save hundreds of pounds in their first few months.

5 Years Operating

Since 2021, we've continuously refined our approach based on real feedback and changing circumstances.

Our Principles

No Judgment Zone

There are no stupid questions when you're navigating a new system. Whether you're confused about how to use a chip and PIN card or unsure about queuing etiquette, we've heard it all before and we're here to help without making you feel silly.

Transparent About Limitations

We can't solve every problem. We can't speed up visa processing, make landlords more responsive, or change how UK bureaucracy works. But we can help you understand these systems and work within them more effectively.

Privacy Matters

The questions you ask us often involve personal financial or legal situations. We treat every conversation with discretion and never share your information or specific situation with others, even in anonymised form, without your permission.

Continuous Improvement

We regularly ask for feedback and actually use it to improve our services. If something isn't working, we want to know. If you have suggestions, we want to hear them. This service evolves based on what people actually need.

Beyond Individual Support

While we primarily work with individuals and families, we also contribute to the broader newcomer community in several ways.

Information Sharing

When we notice patterns in the challenges people face, we document solutions and share them freely. Knowledge shouldn't be locked away.

Connecting People

Sometimes what you need isn't advice but connection with others going through similar experiences. We occasionally facilitate introductions when appropriate.

Advocacy

When we see systemic issues that create unnecessary barriers for newcomers, we raise them with relevant organisations and authorities. Small voices together can create change.

Why People Trust Us

We've Been There

This isn't theoretical knowledge. Every piece of guidance comes from personal experience or from helping hundreds of people through the same situations.

No Hidden Interests

We don't receive referral fees from banks, estate agents, or service providers. When we recommend something, it's because we genuinely believe it's your best option.

We Live Here

We're not giving advice from abroad or based on how things used to be. We're active participants in UK life, using the same systems we help you navigate.

Results Speak

Our track record comes from real people who found our help valuable enough to recommend us to friends, family, and colleagues making similar moves.
